VJ’s Project 7Summit – 2020

Are you ready for Everest?

Is a question every mountaineer asks when he starts his mountaineering career? It’s a visionary DREAM to be on TOP OF THE WORLD.

3yrs ago was when I first started to hike with some friends and got serious about adventuring some of the high peaks around Asia mainly in Malaysia and Indonesia. After trekking through some of the difficult trails and being on top of the highest point of Indochina-Vietnam (Fansipan-3143m).

It was time for me to push my limits to Everest Base Camp in the cold winter days of December 2014. Christmas2014 went on an adventure to EBC and I successfully finished my Dream Trip of Everest Base Camp my first 5000m+ trail. This changed my life to think beyond once limitations. Being in Nature and exploring new places and people changed me and my personal goals. THAT MOMENT HIKING BECAME MY PASSION.

I set a dream of climbing high peaks around the world within next several years. To chase my dream to chase those adventures and to feel the sense of achievements that comes along through those adventures.

Project 7summit - Chasing AltitudeWhat are the 7Summits?

One of life’s major achievements!!!

The Seven Summits challenge is one of the greatest achievements of one scaling the highest mountain on each of Earth’s seven continents.

Mount Kilimanjaro : Mount Kilimanjaro, with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, and rises approximately 4,900 m from its base to 5,895 metres above sea level.(Elevation: 5,895 m)

Aconcagua : Aconcagua is the highest mountain outside Asia, at 6,961 metres, and by extension the highest point in both the Western Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. (Elevation: 6,962 m)

Carstensz Pyramid : Puncak Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid is the highest summit of Mount Carstensz or Mount Jayawijaya in the Sudirman Range of the western central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia. (Elevation: 4,884 m)

Denali : Denali is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet above sea level.(Elevation: 6,190 m)

Mount Elbrus : Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain in Russia and in Europe, and the tenth most prominent peak in the world. A dormant volcano, Elbrus forms part of the Caucasus Mountains in Southern Russia, near the border with Georgia.(Elevation: 5,642 m)

Mount Everest : Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in China as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain. Its peak is 8,848 metres above sea level. Mount Everest is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal. (Elevation: 8,848 m)

Vinson Massif : Vinson Massif is a large mountain massif that is 21 km long and 13 km wide and lies within the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains. It overlooks the Ronne Ice Shelf near the base of the Antarctic Peninsula.(Elevation: 4,892 m)

The original 7 summits, as achieved by Bass, included Mt Denali in North America, Mt Aconcagua in South America, Mt Elbrus in Europe, Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mt Vinson in Antarctica, Mt Everest in Asia and Mt Kosciuszko in Australia. Since that time, there has been much debate on the validity of the last entry, Mt Kosciusko. Many argue that the more difficult and technically challenging Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) should be included as the true 7th summit.

7Summits Completed :

High Altitude Sickness occurs when one makes a rapid ascent to higher altitudes. Altitude sickness can occur in some people as low as 8,000 feet due to the decreasing amount of oxygen (low PO2) that occurs at high altitudes.

High 2,500 to 4,000 metres 8,000 to 13,000 feet
Very High 4,000 to 5,500 metres 13,000 to 18,000 feet
Extremely High over 5,500 metres over 18,000 feet

There are three main types of altitude sickness:

  • Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
  • High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
  • High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE)

Everyone’s reason for attempting 7Summits are different but for me is more like a personal achievements and a passion of a travelling goal than a climbing one. Just like I want to see the unique places in every country in the world, I also believe that the tops of all seven continents are special places to reach and accomplish a special achievement in life.

I also want to contribute to the society and nature and inspire people through these adventures. To show one can push beyond his limits and to live outside his comfort zone.

I will be bringing a series of fundraising and awareness activities and programs. Stay tuned for the updates.
